Important Safety Information for the Multifamily Industry

Marietta Drapery & Window Coverings is among first to add new safety measures to miniblinds.

November 1, 2000, Marietta, GA. Marietta Drapery & Window Coverings Co., Inc. (MDC) joins the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) and the Window Covering Safety Council in warning consumers of a potential child hazard stemming from the "inner" or "lift" cords of window blinds.

According to the CPSC, if blinds are not locked into position, very young children have reportedly been able to grasp and pull the inner cord into their cribs and around their necks. The repair is a "cord stop", which is a small ring that is knotted onto each pull cord just beneath the headrail so that the inner cord cannot be pulled out.

MDC has adopted product modifications to reduce the risks associated with inner lift cords on horizontal blinds. Specifically, the cord stop will be placed on newly manufactured products to prevent the inner cord from being pulled and formed into a loop when the blind is lowered and the cord lock disengaged. The product modification has been made for horizontal blinds manufactured in North America or arriving at U. S. Customs after September 15th, 2000.

Products manufactured before that date, however, should be "retrofitted" with cord stops. Retrofit kits for residential use are available for free by calling 1-800-506-4636. The multifamily industry should call 1-631-321-6459 for bulk quantities. You can visit the Window Covering Safety Council website for complete information and illustrations on window cord safety hazards and their solutions.

As a leading supplier to the Multifamily Housing Industry over the last 30 years, MDC wants you to realize our commitment in providing safe, high quality window coverings. Please advise your residents to never place cribs and furniture near windows. Eliminate looped cords, and make sure that all cords are kept out of the reach of young children.
